After watching that match, I think it’s a crime we didn’t get a Magee run. He was rusty, yes but he would’ve fit well in Luger’s spot as a muscle-headed midcarder. Warrior got by with much less.

Vince and WWF dropped the ball on this dude. Just my humble opinion.

I do wonder how much of it was he was the shits after the Bret match or if the other muscleheads politicked him out.

Yeah it's weird, I understand he was a bad worker, but it's not like Vince ever cared about workrate anyway. I guess it has more to do with him being a black hole of charisma? Say what you want about Warrior but his insane rambling promos were fucking great. Luger also had charisma, but not as a babyface american hero.

Again, going back to Warrior as an example. When put with Rude, Savage, Dibiase, he looked half decent. Against other guys, not so much. Magee needed some time to season, and it’s a shame bro will always be a “what if”.

Fuck it, I want Magee in the jjsb clusterfuck next year

>ITT: People haven't heard the stories of what a sub-Warrior useless immobile bodybuilder Magee was, as reported by multiple sources
>Or seen any of his other matches against competent workers that just aren't Bret
You couldn't have the guy wrestle Bret every night. At a certain point he'd need to squash some jobbers without looking like ass. If anything, that match just goes to show how good Bret was at carrying people. Choshu couldn't do it. DiBiase couldn't do it. Arn fucking Anderson couldn't do it.

Magee was useless and we're all better off without him.

Dude, look at the fucking guy and look at how he can flip.
I legit wouldn't have given a fuck if he couldn't wrestle, I would have still pushed him. It's like Strowman, you don't often get people that look the way Strowman does, and even though he was terrible when he started, they never gave up on him and he became perfectly acceptable. If they gave Tom that much time, I'm sure that in time Tom would have had the same level of success.

The important thing in this story is the lost match and what a great worker Bret was.

Not Tom Magee.

>I legit wouldn't have given a fuck if he couldn't wrestle
so what?
Even Hulk Hogan with his limited move set was a capable worker.

>if they gave Tom that much time
there wasn't a need to, wrestlers back then weren't micromanaged by Vince regarding the ring work. It was more necessary to be a capable worker (this goes beyond MOVEZ, btw) and Tom wasn't that. You are literally being a mark right now, not realizing how much Bret carried the guy.

He probably could've been developed into something decent given some time and patience but "slowly developing guys over time" wasn't really something Vince went for back in the day

Based on what, exactly? The guy wrestled for 5 years and was trained by Stu Hart. If he didn't get it by then, he wasn't getting it.

Vince also didn’t need to develop people, since most of his roster consisted of talented guys who worked in the upper card of other companies.

As much as Vince likes body guys, he was quick to give up on muscle bound meatheads if they were total shitters.

Oh yeah. This myth that McGee totally sucked, well, really sucks. I don't even feel anything strong for this guy but that McGee/Bret Hart story which I first read of wrestlecrap years ago always sounded bullshit to me.

The real reason he didn't get pushed by Vince in THAT era of all eras is probably more sinister and political.

Obviously needed a better stage name though.

after watching his match with DiBiase and Anderson, he wasn't the greatest, but there have been far far worse that stepped onto WWF and WCW TV of that era. If they would have stopped looking at him like the second coming, and just stuck him in there with solid guys to help him, he could have been a solid midcard champion. Guys like Santana, Perfect, Martel, Hart, DiBiase, probably even Michaels could have helped him put on decent matches.

I’d go out in a limb and say Jannetty is decent if given proper time to produce a match. Angle definitely helps, but I think Jannetty defeats his own stereotype when it comes to in-ring action.

You can. He had a look, and while it was just "the look" and not the talent, that was pretty common back then. But I'm saying that they could have done something with him, and while he wasn't the next Hulk Hogan, they could have done something with the guy instead of waste his time.
