I think it's fair to say that Orton is coming up on his last years of wrestling, given that he's taken on a lighter schedule.

Upon his retirement, how will you remember him? What did you think of his in ring work, his promo ability, etc? Was he fit for the role of the second guy behind Cena in WWE?

Either way, he's going to be remembered very well.

Fucking legend. Dimes incarnate. I wouldn't be that surprised to see him go to AEW for fun since he gives 0 fucks. I also remember him talking about his frustration with his "babyface bullshit" booking a while back on E&C(?) podcast. Granted he's since turned heel, but it's not like he's doing much besides nostalgia matches and random RKOs.

He is WWE if WWE was a wrestler: a guy who could do more with that talent they have but doesn't want to unless forced to, because there's really no need for them to do so. They've got their slot in the business securred and they have a couple of things that they know can pop an audience if necessary, so it's okay if they just redo the same matches over and over again.

Imagine being so good that you just don't even bother putting in effort and you still become a 13 time world champion, the youngest world champion in history, are able to pretty much do and say what you want without repercussions, and be permanently over enough to slot in to whatever position on the card you are asked to.

He's that B+ player type WWE used to talk about. But because he was liked by the right people he was able to keep a sustained spot at or near the top for 15 years. Because he spent pretty much his entire life in the WWE system, we never did see what he was truly capable of though. That being said, there were stretches where he was really entertaining and stretches where he was really boring to me.

My friend was talking about his career and said something along the lines of, "Is there anyone that has had more accomplishments and claims to fame, while still being completely unremarkable than Randy Orton?"

I always think that of him. I think on his highs, like Legend Killer and that period in 2008-early 09 when he was white hot and WWE put him against Haitch and killed his heat, as potential starmaking avenues. Like bigger than Cena, yet WWE always seems to kill him when he's doing something interesting.

The guy himself also does the same, so I can't blame WWE for everything. When he's against a new and unique opponent he goes all out and wrestles like fucking Okada, but then he goes back to his lazy-ass ways. It's a lot like Nakamura during his final years of NJPW, where you see glimpses of him giving a fuck and actually want to see it.

I think he needs a new coat over anyone else. He did way too much too soon in WWE and it fucked up how big of a star he would become. If I were Khan, I would zero in on Randy over even CM Punk, because I think Orton in a new place with that finisher is dimes.

Literally 100% of his character development comes from his theme song.

Him "hearing voices" has never - not once - been part of his on-screen persona or any segment, but since that's how his theme song starts, that's supposed to be his character, because gosh darn, the announcers sure talk about it like it's something we're all supposed to know.

And that really sums up Orton's career in general. Did it happen? Did he do anything? Did anyone notice or care? I don't know, but Michael Cole is sure talking like he did.

I don't have much attachment to him even though he debuted not long after I started watching wrestling. He got to the point of overexposed in 2008/2009 and I hated him ever since. He was a good wrestler who put on great matches with the right opponent, but fuck he could be so boring. It didn't matter if he was a babyface or a heel. Outside of the pose and the RKO, he was lacking something to get me invested in him. Maybe it's because he always came off like he barely gave a shit.

They did an angle when Vince started forcing the Cena/Orton best of meme that apparently Orton had been larping about hearing voices in his head or suffering from any sort of explosive anger syndrome but that continuity has either been retconned or forgotten about since proof indicates he does in Kayfabe after burning down Wyatt's barn.

Orton was never big on my radar of wrestling until he became the “temperamental psychopath” and began getting angry and kicking people’s heads off. I remember him going through the McMahon family and being mortified on who would get the punt next. Then it all went back down when the Triple H/Orton match at Wrestlemania happened. But that kicked off my radar into looking for other lower-tiered talent and hoping that they could also reach that peak of vitriol and frustration. Thanks to Orton, I half-expect a dynamic in other wrestlers when they fight. I want to see the frustration. I want to see the confidence. I want to see a wrestler stop and attempt to plan their next few moves. Maybe the angle isn’t Randy’s idea, but that performance made it clear that even a dull sounding and repetitive wrestler can crank to 11 and make me invested. (Unless your Ziggler, where the 11 is all they know)

this
it's a show they sell a ticket to
Not even hating on it as a show, the idea of "some old guys tell some stories and you get to cheer them or yell BRODY during Carlos Colon's speech" isn't bad by any means, but it's just another show on Mania weekend

Triple H, Undertaker and Goldberg are still wrestling, Randy is 10 years their junior, even on a lighter schedule, I imagine we'll still be seeing him plenty in some capacity

A guy I've never cared about or who's ever had a memorable moment/match of any kind. The definition of WWE's specialty; "just a guy"

And not everyone is gonna agree with that but when he's done wrestling Randy is gonna have his health, his money, and the rest of his life to spend with his family. There's something to be said about that.

Orton was always mediocre at best. The fact he's a 13 time World Champion is a testament to WWE's shitty booking. He single handedly tanked Smackdown so bad, WWE had to officially end the brand split.

He's been in the main event scene in WWE for 15 years and only has a handful of memorable matches to his name. If his dad wasn't Bob Orton, he would have fared as well in pro wrestling as he did in the Marines.

yeah, I'm not even going to fault him for cruise controlling through his career
he's seen dad's co-workers slowly become broken down cripples since he was a kid, he knows damn well why he should half-ass things
