GCW appreciation thread.
Are they the best indie in the country? The biggest? The coolest?

Who are your favorites? What upcoming matches/shows are you hyped about?

I can't think of the last time an indie was on this kind of streak. Not even PWG puts out this much good shit in a year's time.

I am in fucking love with GCW. All the wacky shit they do combined with the deathmatches and shit like Bloodsport, they are awesome. I went to ToS 4 live and (aside from G-Raver basically dying) it was the most amazing atmosphere I've ever felt at a show, and I didn't think it would get better than being at a Takeover

yeah, PCO is a unique thing, PCO came out of retirement after five years while all of these other guys have been active wrestlers for a while

a deathmatch promotion wanting Masato Tanaka shouldn't be a strange thing to anyone, nor should any promotion wanting LA Park be them trying to do another PCO thing, especially when LA Park has been established forever now while PCO was just the dude in the Quebecers that wasn't The Mountie

also the RnR Express were in Final Deletion, they just get booked to get booked lmao

I remember in 2016 going to a local rock festival in it's first year (that also turned out to be its last) and there being a wrestling show with a bunch of literal whos in a barn at the fairgrounds and it was the most shindie thing ever. I only stayed for part of one match and thought the name was fucking hilarious, Game Changer Wrestling. These guys weren't going to change shit.

When they first started getting buzz I couldn't fucking believe it. Later I found out some people I'd go on to know and really like were involved in the event like Janela, Chris Dickinson and Solo Darling.

Kind of agree. They have some fun matches every now and then but the deathmatches are fucking stupid garbage and Nick Gage being pushed as their top star is retarded because Gage is a crappy wrestler doing a bitchmade wannabe tough guy gimmick. GCW did a good job to eat CZW's lunch but they seem to be at their ceiling already, but then again CZW survived for over a decade being like the 6th most popular US indie so I guess there's that.

GCW is ==b Era: the Promotion.

This isn't a knock. Joey Janela specifically, and the company generally, understands the psychotic three-ring circus appeal of those days better than anyone in the biz besides Konnan. Gage also adds his Southern wrasslin' enthusiasm to give the whole thing authenticity. You can tell that GCW is a bunch of bros fantasy booking the promotion they've always wanted. This is how SHLAK and Markus Crane keep getting work there.

AEW is a similar in feel, but wildly different in style.

Drunk post time: I may be biased because I see/hang with Crane a bunch since I live in Chicago, but GCW has been my favorite indy of the past few years. Its got all the fun and hype of earlier CZW with the match quality to back it up. Plus their Mania week shows have been shows of the year the past few years between Spring Break, Bloodsport, and the Cassidy show this year. Theyre really the only company I have the want to keep up with anymore and I hope they continue to grow without dipping in quality and take over the indies in the next few years.

GCW is the feeder for AEW and PWG. i love them but its pretty clear at this point.

GCW was using Jungle Boy and Jake Atlas before PWG and they're west coast wrestlers. Gage was at starrcast, Marko, No-Legs and Orange Cassidy worked DoN. GCw is running "All in" weekend. I would not be surprised if some of the people on this 2 Cups show end up working a pre show battle royal.

AEW doesn't actually know of any burgeoning talent scenes and the attendance of Spring Break 2 put them on everyone's radar. It's just the Elite & their family/friends getting salaries from Tony Khan and they're going to pillage GCW, MLW and Impact to fill out their undercard. If it wasn't for GCW, Super Dragon would be still filling his shoes with skinny brits and getting zero buzz.

G-Raver, Colon, and Lloyd would probably make decent runs if AEW gets desperate enough to make a Hardcore division. SHLAK - from my knowledge - has been cancelled by wokescold Twitter though so AEW would be risking a PR nightmare from like Bix and Deadspin maybe if they ever keyed onto hiring him.

I could imagine Jimmy Lloyd and Tony Deppen being signed and getting over big with AEW fans. Shlak could work as a mid card heel but they'd never do it. I almost feel like NXT would try to get Nick Gage before AEW would, just because he's one of the biggest indie names that hasn't been poached yet. It'll never happen though, and even if it did, I can't see either of the big promotions using him right. He'd probably just be like another Tommy Dreamer where he shows up in battle royales with a garbage can full of wacky props.

I forgot who it was, but someone on Twitter joked a while back that WWE will eventually launch WWE NXTreme as an M-Rated WWE Network show to find a reason to sign all the big deathmatch guys. Of course, it would probably just be WWE's lame "extreme rules" shit. I could honestly see that happening.

Just jumping straight into anything is the general best way to go, but there are some good shows that people can watch to get an idea of what it's all about. A direct example would be To Live and Die in LA, where Cryme Tyme somehow ended up on commentary and Shlak had a fun mess of a deathmatch.

Janela was the main event of an AEW show already and clearly AEW has a lot of faith in him if they're willing to put him in that spot.

They're only 3 shows and Marko Sunt was really not on anyone's radar 365 days ago, give them a chance to "use him correctly".

I think Janela is getting his weakness' exposed tbh.

He was in that main event to bump around for Moxley and then he went back to the pre show. All he's really done is take bumps, whether its for Hangman, Moxley or Luchasaurus.

And I'm just not feeling this ALL OUT 3 way. I think Cornette does have valid constructive criticisms, and Janela-Allin-Havoc are being put in a position thats drawing attention to their flaws.

Janela, Havoc, Darby and Marko are quickly being put in a class of "are here to take big bumps for the real stars" and once you get that perception on you, thats all you ever are.

Janela would work so much better as a mouthy Eddie Gilbert-type manager/wrestler

They Said It Couldn't Be Done and 400 Degreez are also good starting points as far as this year goes, and although I didn't get the hype myself people are really high on the G-Raver vs Matt Tremont deathmatch from the former

They're all small guys. Their punches are very weak. A lot of their hardcore spots are contrived indie choreography. They've been exposed as not tough guys in real life.

Compare a Janela-Havoc hardcore match with the Eliminators vs the Gangstas in 95 and tell me which match feels more dangerous.

These guys are not being presented as "ass kickers" They're being presented as "guys who take a good ass kicking." In the 80s, those guys were called enhancement talent... or jobbers. That's the same role the Mulkey Bros had.
The difference is the Mulkeys were not taking bumps on the corners of chairs and shredding up their back for real, for a spot that wasn't even in the finish of a pre show match.

I also disagree that they were more than "made money off bumps." It ignores the years of mystique that Foley cultivated as Cactus Jack/Mankind and Jeff played one of the best Ricky Mortons ever. Also, again, both of them - even Jeff - had bigger bodies than Joey, Darby & Havoc. Cactus Jack looked like and acted like an ass kicker for years

Ricky Morton didn't bump all over the place. I don't think you realize how much of Morton's act was built off his selling not his bumping.

As dumb as Jeff is, he's actually been pretty smart at knowing when to maximize the reaction to his taking of a big bump. Same with Morton.

The true art of wrestling is knowing when to put another stamp on your bump card. To not kill yourself on a wasted bump
Cactus Jack taking a Vader powerbomb on concrete to build the amnesia angle/Halloween Havoc 93 main event: maximizing a bump.
Cactus Jack taking the same bump a year later and having bobby Heenan no-sell it: a wasted bump. And it was the final straw for Foley to give his notice to WCW.

I'm not going to deny that Jeff Hardy and Mick Foley didn't take wasted bumps but imo, Janela/Darby/Havoc have all already wasted more bumps: big actually-painful spots that lessen their career span in front of small rooms that only existed to be one kickout in many.

I think Joey's work has actually dipped from the accumulated injuries of his bumps... and he's only 30 years old. And I love him, he's entertaining as hell... but his body has already started to go to shit. He's more out of shape than he was when he started the Bab Boy gimmick.

If Jeff Hardy is looking better at 41 than Joey Janela at 30, then Jeff is doing something that Joey isn't.

I'm not sure I fully understand the point that is being made?

I won't argue that the guys you used got more mileage out of their bumping in terms of the where and when they chose to take the risk. But ultimately you can't really draw a clean line of delineation between "safe" and "risky" bumps in any meaningful way.

Ricky Morton, relative to the standards of the time, did bump all over the place and fucked up his body a good amount. Not from a handful of insane, signature spots, but from an accumulation of basic, traditional bumps over the course of his career.

Guys get paralyzed off backdrops and sunset flips, while people who dive off balcony's for a living walk without a stain on them. At the end of the day how you take your bumps from a foundational perspective, not how "crazy" said bumps are superficially, has more of a bearing on wear and tear than anything.

Not to say Darby/Allin/Janela would be safer falling off ladders less. They would. But not to the extent that they'd be better off taking rolling lucha bumps stuff like dropkicks and hip tosses a dozen times every match.

Mostly depends on where it is. I've been to GCW shows before and they don't really start on time, probably cause they're waiting to get as many people in the building they can before it starts.

on raver's facebook he uploaded a video saying that it was supposed to be a brainbuster spot on top of the ladder, and that he and jimmy had done it at another show in japan or something. they sadly didn't account for the strength of the ladders and the step jimmy was on caved in soon after he lifted raver up.

raver also said his hand is almost completely numb and immobile, as is a good portion of his arm. i'm glad he got the surgery fees raised.

Raver just posted another facebook update and saying that all of the doctors he's trying to get a hold of are giving the runaround. He said this while trying to hold back tears:

> I had an appointment today... I went there and saw the doctor on staff, and he examined what was going on with my arm and kind of knew the severity of it right away after I explained how it happened and everything like that.

>Everything seemed to be good as far as him scheduling up. It took him a minute to find someone in Pittsburgh willing to see me for tomorrow. He did find somebody and set up an appointment.

>Everything was set to go, and then I received a phone call a little bit later from that doctor who was supposed to see me tomorrow, and they cancelled on me. They said that, unfortunately, they took a look at my notes from what's going on and what the doctor said over here, and already said that, for one, he couldn't do it, which is fine.

>He also said I should have had it done the minute it happened, which, in Chicago, at the moment, I don't think was even an option. At least that wasn't presented to me.

>To really top it off, I asked if I need to do it, where do I need to go? And she basically told me I need to go to the top tier places in the world to be able to get this done.

>I know that sounds insane, but I guess it's just the way it is and what I've done to my arm. It's already so fucking frustrating.

>When they called me, everywhere was already closed so when I went to call the other place, they were closed, so they could give me any more information or a referral.

>I tried to get a referral from a place in Chicago, but unfortunately they can't do that because it's illegal or whatever the fuck.

>Right now, it's just looking like a lost cause. It's looking like last option type things. I'm not going to stop, but stupid stuff is already happening.

>It's bumming me out so bad, especially hearing that I should have had it done ASAP, especially now that it's been four days.

>My options are limited based on the time of day, basically.

Man our healthcare system is fucked.

I don't think Raver is defending the spot. It's more the issue how Chicago docs got him an appointment in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh docs cancel on terms of liability after already saying they'll do it, chewing Raver out for not getting it fixed ASAP, and then tries again with Chicago but they're not giving a shit and telling him to fuck off.
