Is barbed wire in pro wrestling duller than real one? I grew up next to a farm surrounded by it and can't imagine bumping on that, especially with naked body parts, without getting seriously injured.

Why does nobody actually pin their opponent's shoulders on a cover attempt? They just lie across their stomach or chest and hook a leg.

the higher you are on their body, the more easier it is for them to kick out, the lower you are, they can just raise their shoulders. being in the middle and hooking a leg allows you to put pressure on both parts making them exert more energy to kick out

Decent sized companies trim it down to various degrees depending on the company and how much blood they’re willing to spill. If you go to your shitty local indie if they’re doing a match with barbed wire there’s a decent chance it won’t be gimmicked though and everyone will just get cut to shit

why don't babyfaces ever bring in backup when they know they're fighting a guy who has a valet or anyone else able to provide distraction to even the field?
it's so tiring having to see the babyface look like a clown because the opponent's pals can just come in and do whatever they want with little to no consequences

The short version is that wrestling used to be a shoot, and was focused around carnivals and circuses. Eventually, the wrestlers realized that it would be much easier on their bodies and checkbooks if they preplanned everything in their matches.

However, if people realized that everything was fake, they wouldn't make as much money, because the big draw of wrestling then was that you were seeing real contests and tests of strength and endurance. So they created a public facade that all the matches were still real, while they preplanned everything. This facade is kayfabe, the term itself coming from carnie speak.

Why not? Something sharp breaking your skin hurts less that something dull. Stab yourself with a knife, then try with a spoon. The trick is understanding that superficial cuts bleed and look like they hurt but don't really hurt that much. Plus, really, getting poked with barbed wire is better for you long term than getting dropped on your head...

A lot of wrestling's best moments are based on a wrestler stabbing himself with something sharp. Just look at Dusty's forehead.

Also there was a common 19th century carnival con where a wrestler will take on any paying challenger for a chance to win a larger cash prize. A planted challenger would almost win a worked match against the wrestler giving the onlookers the idea they had a chance but of course the shoot skilled wrestler would have no problem beating the marks and taking their money.

"Intercontinental" originally referred to North and South America. The title was the (kayfabe) unification of the South American Heavyweight Championship (which never existed) and North American Heavyweight Championship. The story goes that Pat Patterson (then the NA Champ) won the SA Title in a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, then unified the belts.

The belt’s current design includes parts of Africa and Europe on the centerpiece along with North and South America. So…I guess Asia and Australia don’t matter. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is there a team that does a double-team catapult, where one partner launches the other into a flying clothesline (or the like) into the opponent? Sorta like pic related, but with an arm to the face instead of a tender kiss to the gooch.

I can't remember which team did it, but yeah I've seen that spot. Partner A hits a clothesline/lariat and the opponent falls back down, normally hitting Partner B's knees as an added thing at the end.

How is mercury poisoning not rampant in deathmatchers? I know there's the possibility that some matches use spent/drilled light tubes that get rid of most of the mercury vapor, but with how prevalent light tubes are in tournaments I can't imagine all of them being completely empty. I've seen claims that the guys just hold their breath but surely that shit can get in through open wounds too, right?

Aces of Poker (LA Park/ hijo de Fantasma/ Psycho Clown / Pentagon jr mask match) from Triplemania has a good amount of spectacle

It's important to be kinda patient getting into lucha. There's a lot of little things and some fairly big things different, like if how DBZ, Naruto, and Fist of the North Star all play the same basic notes but the nitty gritty can play out noticeably differently to the point that even their basic punching and kicking can have a very different look depending on the guys.
CMLL is the big mainstay of the traditional lucha style by any accounts I hear. Indies vary from group to group because they're indies, AAA has sort of a mix of traditional lucha, crash tv 90s Monday Night War brawling, and Mexican hardcore indies. AAA seems to be easier to jump into from the USA scene.
The CMLL weekly shows are also good to get a baseline of what's normal over time. There's some duds, some okay stuff, usually some good stuff too, but if you only watch "the good matches" you'll get a skewed perspective on things too.
