>We went a whole year without a new thread. RIP Hiromu thread

>Puro Tube is on Tuesdays at 3pm EDT / 8pm BST in /wooo/tube -http://taima.tv/r/wooo and mainly shows promotions outside of Dragon Gate and NJPW. Join in as everyone argues why their favorite fed is superior and Yanopost, Anopost, CIMApost and dance like Keita until your tummy is full from all that snackpine.
>DG Tube is on Thursdays at 8pm EDT / 1am BST in Mondai Night Ryu -http://taima.tv/r/mondainightryu and features the latest and classic Dragon Gate shows. Other stuff is featured here from time to time as well. (like cheesy 80s films or the mega marathon before Kobe World and recently OWE)

Outside of Puro Tube, there's usually a few puro marks in the chat that can help fill you in on storylines and find you matches. Just show up outside of big shows like Raw, and you'll find someone in there to help you out. Puro matches also show up in the playlist, so scroll around to find them. NJPW, DG, and DDT live events are regularly streamed in the tubes, check the schedule for details.

NJPW: Oldest and largest promotion in Japan. Owned by Bushiroad and is booked by Gedo. His booking gets the tubes riled up sometimes (all the time), but the match quality generally makes up for it. In the midst of something of a revival, and although you may argue that it is already drawing to a close, they are still doing good business at the moment. They run one of the largest shows in wrestling, called Wrestle Kingdom, every year on January 4th at the fabled Tokyo Dome. Most every show they run, large and small, air in the tubes. They have a slew of foreign wrestlers on their roster right now. They also have a wonderful streaming website over athttp://njpwworld.com/

Dragon Gate: Almost certainly the second largest promotion in Japan. Born out of the Toryumon promotion, which was the brainchild of Ultimo Dragon, their style is a mixture of classic puro, cruiserweight/junior heavyweight sprints, and lucha libre. Stable warfare is a huge part of the promotion, with most every wrestler in the company being aligned with a unit in some way. Though it is a big promotion, they retain a grassroots feel, with wrestlers selling merch before and after shows, and running many shows out of community centers and gyms. Most of their large shows air in the tubes, and footage is also posted here. They also have a show that is filmed monthly in their little studio in Kobe called Prime Zone which is wacky, fun, and full of Mondai Ryu schemes. They recently joined the streaming bandwagon over athttps://dragongate.live

DDT: Indie promotion gunning for the second-largest-in-Japan spot alongside Dragon Gate. Founded in 1997 by Sanshiro Takagi (a big Stone Cold Steve Austin fan), they have taken the western sports entertainment style to the next level with ridiculous matches and outrageous gimmicks, like violently gay wrestlers, promos done in PowerPoint before matches, championships specifically for dark matches, and blow-up dolls and ladders winning titles. Despite the goofiness, there is tons of talent there, with names like Kota Ibushi, HARASHIMA, and Kenny Omega having been regulars at one point or another. They have released ddtuniverse, which is like NJPW World. A streaming site for all your DDT needs. The other companies that work alongside DDT also have their stuff on there. They, like NJPW have a great streaming service over athttp://ddtuniverse.com/

AJPW: Still rebuilding from the glory days of the 80s and 90s, when icons like Jumbo Tsuruta, Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi, Toshiaki Kawada, Stan Hansen, Genichiro Tenryu, and Akira Taue loomed large. They were nearly killed after Misawa formed Pro Wrestling NOAH, taking most of the roster with him, but after a decade and a half of turmoil, they are doing fairly well right now, thanks in no small part due to the efforts of Jun Akiyama. The 80s/90s classics are a must-watch for any new puro fan, and their current product ain't bad either. They also joined the streaming sensation sweeping Japan right now. Their website can be found over athttps://www.ajpw.tv

NOAH: Founded in 2000 by Misawa after leaving AJPW. Was arguably the best fed in the world for a few years, featuring the Four Pillars of AJPW and new faces like KENTA, Naomichi Marufuji, Go Shiozaki, and Takeshi Morishima, but since the death of Misawa in 2009, they have taken quite a nosedive. It was being booked by Jado, but has since been sold. NOAH is now working on rebuilding. They are currently working a lot with (skeezy) Japanese indie wrestlers such as YO-HEY and Hayata. Some very talented foreign wrestlers, including Zack Sabre Jr. and Chris Hero, have worked for them as well. They are currently showing random events on their Youtube page. Some say they will be the next to get on the streaming craze.

BJW: Founded in 1995 in the midst of the FMW deathmatch craze, Big Japan became their successor much in the same way CZW became the new ECW. Famed for being the first promotion to use lighttubes in deathmatches, as well as tons of other crazy shit. Over the last few years they have begun toning down the blood and carnage, and have awesome Strong and Tag Team divisions with many talented wrestlers, but this is still the go-to promotion for deathmatches in Japan. They recently joined aboard the streaming train and unveiled BJW Core, which is their streaming service. It is found over athttp://bjwcore.com

Yeah Aoki was pretty versatile in being able to work different styles in the ring. He was also the ace of the the junior heavyweight division and the head trainer for AJPW's dojo helping Jun Akiyama revitalize the promotion. It's a huge loss for them. Also here's what Jun had to say about it in his press conference today - https://twitter.com/alljapan_eng/status/1135853159136538625

I'll admit that I get worried about Ben-K in singles matches sometimes given that he's only been going since 2016, but after the Mochi/Yoshino/Kzy/Eita matches Ben-K's built up a good enough resume that I can trust he'll deliver in-ring with PAC.

Promo-wise, Ben still isn't quite there yet, but he can do short & sweet promos, so DG can handle that.

The Weedman - Wed, 10 Jul 2019 15:27:18 EST U28QmYT+ No.6264773 Reply
It doesn't look like preexisting beef, it looks like Keita trying to get wallabee some press and Harashima laughing him all the way out of DDT.
Pete Rose - Wed, 10 Jul 2019 15:38:29 EST Wl8dbFWi No.6264779 Reply
I think that's basically it? I think the official DDT statement for why Yano got fired was something along the lines of "differing views on what pro-wrestling should be".

Then again attaching a reason to why KEITA in THE house does anything (i.e. "trying to get wallabee some press") assumes that human beings can understand what the fuck runs through that man's mind. Maybe he was just bored that day.

given the size of wrestlemania weekend, people's burnout with wrestlemania's blost and the sizeable anti-wwe sentiment among smarks, a good indie show could absolutely run head to head against WM (in a smaller setting) and do well IMO.

It'd have to be Spring Break-level counter programming tho

Given how much hatred exists between CIMA & Ultimo, RIP any chance of CIMA ever coming back
Unless Yoshino is able to bring the two to the table & bury the hatchet, at least

It all goes back to the Toryumon/Dragon Gate split in 2004, basically. Between most of the money Toryumon Japan made in 2003 going to Ultimo while he was in WWE despite the work CIMA/Mochizuki/Milano/Magnum TOKYO put into carrying Toryumon & a bunch of other issues, Ultimo left in 2004 taking the Toryumon name & branding with him. Didn't help that a year later, Aagan Iisou & Milano would fuck off, competing in promotions that were meant to be competition to Dragon Gate (like dragondoor & El Dorado, both of which had Ultimo's support only to bomb in spectacular fashion).

It's kinda ironic, considering that CIMA & Takashi Okamura (who took over from Ultimo) split from Dragon Gate last year & despite some initial heat (as well as Shingo throwing shade over Twitter), Masato Yoshino & current president Toru Kido have tried to stay on good terms with everybody. But ever since Ultimo came back, CIMA has seemingly been given the Chris Benoit treatment by the company, not even being shown in the 20th anniversary video package at Kobe World.

>With the exception of the ambulance issue in New York City, New Japan was extremely happy with the weekend’s Fighting Spirit USA tour with stops in Lowell, MA, NYC and Philadelphia. Of the three shows, the Philadelphia event was said to have been the most profitable for the company at the gate, but New York City was the #1 night in terms of merchandise sales, with Lowell coming in second for merchandise numbers.

>There were no major injuries coming out of the weekend except for Kota Ibushi having, a cap from one of his teeth knocked out by EVIL in NYC. Referee Red Shoes immediately retrieved it. There’s no word if Ibushi was able to have it placed back on.

>In terms of crowd reaction, New York City was said to have had the hottest crowd reactions.

>Philadelphia was completely sold out, including an additional 200 standing room tickets that were made available because there were so many inquiries to the 2300 Arena for tickets after the initial immediate sellout.

>In a follow-up to the ambulance stuff in NYC, at one point there were FOUR ambulances at the show. As we noted, FDNY was able to send an ambulance to assist but the New York State Athletic Commission turned it down, feeling that they couldn’t chance the ambulance wouldn’t be called away. A second FDNY ambulance arrived, but that still wasn’t deemed appropriate. Finally, not one, but two ambulances that were allowed arrived. The Commission attempted to send one away, telling them they were not needed. When New Japan’s local promoter asked what would happen if a wrestler got injured and needed to be transported, they were told the show would be halted until the ambulance returned. At that point, a rep for the show put his foot down and demanded both ambulances stay. The FDNY ambulance left about an hour after the show started, so for the first hour of the show, there were four ambulances sitting there after the show was delayed nearly 90 minutes because there were zero ambulances.

>The local promoter in NYC, as an extra measure, made sure there was a Japanese speaking doctor in attendance so there would be no language barriers if there was an injury.

>The Japanese commentary on the NYC event was done in studio from Japan as they watched the show commentary team at any of the events. That’s why Toru Yano was on screen but never appeared on any of the nights live.

>We are told the Lowell and Philadelphia events will likely be added to New Japan World.

>We received a lot of feedback from fans who watched the NYC show, noting it felt unique and different in how it looked from the usual NJPW productions. North Carolina’s Premier Wrestling Xperience handled the production of the shows and Patrick Price from their company was the one editing the shows live as they happened. Price specifically edited the NYC show to have more of an American feel, wanting it to come across like a “rock concert” while the other shows were edited to have more of a traditional NJPW production feel.

>The Rock N’ Roll Express being brought in was said to have been a Jado idea.

>Backstage in Philadelphia was WWE’s Kairi Sane, Ring of Honor’s Sumie Sakai and Cheeseburger and CZW’s DJ Hyde. Also at the Philly show, for the first time in decades in the building, was former ECW promoter Ed Zohn, who now works with PWX.

>Danny Cage and his Monster Factory Wrestling Academy assisted with logistics at the Philadelphia event.

>New Japan was really pleased to see there were so many fans who hit multiple nights of the tour.

>To answer the number one question we received going into the tour, it appears Jushin Liger was not booked to appear due to his current storyline where he has morphed into Kishin Liger for the first time in many years and the company didn’t want to contradict that turn of events.

>There were specific market t-shirts created for Boston and Philadelphia.

>Highspots.com provided the ring for the New Japan tour over the weekend.

>There is early talk of perhaps doing more United States shows in the first quarter of 2020, but that is nowhere near confirmed.

>There is slated to be an invited tryout for New Japan Pro Wrestling tomorrow in Los Angeles.
Antonio Honda - Mon, 30 Sep 2019 10:45:37 EST W+NTx977 No.6302488 Reply
That's a weird explanation for liger. Why couldn't "kishin" liger be booked on the show?

More US shows sound cool. They need better US partners though, because they need a better understanding of how to run a bigger building in some of these markets. It sounds like they left a lot of money on the table in Philly and had no idea how to run a show in NY. The NY show could've looked better if we got to see more of the Hammerstein ballroom. It's such a cool looking and iconic venue. Darkening that building is almost like covering the stained glass in KBS Hall. I don't understand how it made it feel like a rock concert...

Forgot to add: Before Ultimo came back, the initial Dragon Gate Entertainment/Dragon Gate International heat had cooled down so much, that CIMA earlier this year stated that he'd be willing to work DGE shows & any bookings from them would become his top priority,

It's a damn shame that the hate between Ultimo & CIMA could prevent him from every coming back, but unfortunately it's just another case of insane Dragon System drama. Doesn't help that guys like Tozawa hates CIMA's guts, too

CIMA's been done with DG since the May 2018 split. Dragon Gate International is just the name of the booking office CIMA, T-Hawk, El Lindaman & Takehiro Yamamura use for international bookings with it being based in Shanghai, alongside OWE.

Dragon Gate Entertainment is the fed that's being ran by Masato Yoshino & Toru Kido in Japan & CIMA expressed a willingness to work DGE under the right circumstances, but again, this was before Ultimo Dragon came back into the picture.

Late, but I highly recommend starting with the 2019 Kobe World show.
IMO it's one of, the best Dragon Gate show this decade & the addition of english commentary makes it easy to understand everything that is going on for new viewers.

After that, look up Big R Shimizu & Eita vs. Kzy & Genki Horiguchi from Dangerous Gate, Shun Skywalker vs. Masato Yoshino from this months Korakuen Hall show & the recent Ben-K/Masaaki Mochizuki Dream Gate Championship match.

Right now, I'd probably give it to NOAH. They've been doing a good job rebuilding themselves lately & (thanks to them putting some shows up on YT), they're pretty easy to catch up with. All Japan has some good stuff too, but their main event scene is pretty fucking stale right now.

So, does Eita win the Dream Gate from Ben-K to establish himself as a top tier heel (and likely a rival for Benk in the process), or does Shun win it to kick off that rivalry?

I feel like Kzy is probably due for a Dream Gate, too, but it's a question of who he wins it from, and how; I still feel the guy needs better finishers than the Skayde Schoolboy, rolling elbow and the Kzy Time; Impact hasn't been set up like something like Gallaria in terms of match-ending potential yet, I think.

Tbh, I'm kinda stumped on who takes the belt off of Ben-K since (as you mentioned), Eita, Kzy & Shun all feel like guys who could beat him for the title.

I suppose it all depends on how they handle the 3 guys going forward, since the Toryumon/R.E.D feud is still going on, Shun's story hasn't really taken the next big leap yet & Kzy hasn't been in a major feud since Dangerous Gate. Either way, gimme a Big R/Ben-K Dream Gate match, DG

no joking but i wish
doi naruki has like 50/50 to win or lose because he haven't fought in the past against ben-k, which it's his advantage to win and funny would be if he lost again, that will be his 8th lost dream gate challenge match
in other way ben-k fought opponents in the past so he knew weaknesses of their bullshit match and psychology the fuck up all the way down, anyway if you want to put kzy over, he needs to be really as transitional champion, i can't reaally see him as ace and some shit because of the shitass looking body, dude charisma? suck my ass, if you want shun over, that will not gonna happen due to planned long-term booking and storyline by dragon gate gedo and thank god for that, eita's push will be definitely as top face but tho benk fought against him in kog final so i'm very doubt unless eita will win from doi dream gate run, the only one guy who can defeat clean is fucking mothafucking big r shimizu, look at him, fatass who gathers all pure girls from all-around japan areas, no wonder he's based, big r shimizu - remember his name
Ortvatistadon - Wed, 06 Nov 2019 16:15:02 EST sK8BwNDg No.6321949 Reply
Kzy won't be the Ace going forward, but he is way too over (& honestly, complaints about his body aside, too good) to just be a transitional champion. He can have a solid 5 month reign with some great defenses, before putting over a heel like Eita or something.

Doi should get a Dream Gate reign someday, but now just doesn't feel like the right time to do it, with how hard DG has been pushing the younger generation. Feels like it'd be a step backwards right now, but they can do it in 2020 or 2021, or something.
Superstar Billy Graham - Wed, 06 Nov 2019 17:06:15 EST iwbGlNjo No.6321991 Reply
I don't equate "ace" with "whoever is holding the Dream Gate at the time." You can be a valid champion for the promotion without being the ace; usually I'd say that's reserved for someone who is a proven draw, who can draw every show, and also be relied on to be in a major storyline to give the promotion a concrete foundation to stand on. Tanahashi is one of those people, because no matter where you put him, his credibility isn't diminished.

Kzy's probably my favorite part of Dragon Gate, but he's too good at gong kids and comedy to be the ace; I'd say Ben-K doesn't hit my definition either (despite his push) because he can't really talk, and putting him in a conversation with Doi, Yoshino, Yamato, or Hulk, you can tell how different they are in terms of personality and how their character shows through their dialog. Eita used to be terrible at this, but he's gotten a lot better, and Big R has really improved since joining MaxiMuM and beyond.

I'd say Yamato and Yoshino are closer to DG's current aces because they can do anything and fit in anywhere, and they seem like genuine people (at least in the characters they are playing). Then again, I think everyone in the company (except for the opening match jobbers and the Strong Machines) pull their weight in Dragon Gate, and that's partially why I like it so much.

True. Pretty much everyone in DG's Big 6 (except Tozawa) got good runs with the Dream Gate, but only among them YAMATO & Yoshino were the only ones who really became the Ace of Dragon Gate. Ben-K has been knocking it out of the park in this title reign, but I feel like he hasn't crossed that threshold into Acedom, like some of the guys you've listed. At least not right now.

Age of consent laws in most westernized countries are antiquated throw backs to by gone eras and are usually overridden by local laws because trying to change them on a national scale is a headache. In Japan it's no different and the rules they work on are even more disturbing.
First off Joji is under arrest via a local law called the "Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths" It rolls off the tongue much easier in Japanese.
It prohibits the sale of and easy access of obscene materials to minor but it goes a little further where it punishes anyone that partake is obscene acts or influence to minors.
It's completely supersedes any consent there was if any.
And always, the parents have the last say, if they're not keen on the idea that their teenage daughter is in a relationship with someone older it's done-zo. Dude is getting the bracelets.
And when I said their consent laws were disturbing well the Tokyo law doesn't have the same severity on female on male instances.
An older woman doing what Joji did would get a misdemeanor at worst.

He was confronted by a police officer while they were walking down the street with the girl.
The report says they met on LINE (Japanese social media app) and agreed to meet after one of his shows.
He admitted he knew she was 16.
A few things could have happened here because the report says sexual act or can be translated as "deed".
He could have sent her some R-18 messages/etc on the app which would mean he broke the Tokyo law I mentioned above about obscene material. Meaning he could have not did anything physical
Or he was doing physical things with her which is definitely going to get him buried.
Judging by the information they have released it was a consent thing but still he's breaking some law.

In the build to the match, he goaded Chono in a way that made him come across as an old and busted guy out of Chono's league. The most recent comparison to the build would be sort of like Batista and HHH where Onita was begging for one last big money match so he can go out like a champ.

So I've seen this sequence/taunt a bit in puro (and randomly in CHIKARA during that one KOT match that was just basically Quack playing out his puro fantasy). Can anyone explain to me what exactly it is (the jump)? From what I can tell it's a DDT/Michinoku Pro thing, but I'm not sure.

Actually, just being reminded of this because I saw someone talk about it on Twitter - is there any reason why Archive.org isn't a go-to place for most of the puro uploads? The DMCA/copyright shit around there isn't the same kind that affects everywhere else, unless I'm mistaken? It would work for comm. releases at the very least

there doesn't seem to be automatic detectors like youtube, but there's a few things that I've manage to get popped I suspect by people paid to watch and report, netflix MST3k, DBZ movies with the malaysian dub, and some other stuff I can't guess, and when you get a video pulled they nuke the whole account
of course they don't seem to care if you open another burner email account

Harold Meij explained why in a recent interview:

>Meij said there are a lot of eyes on Japan for the coming year because of the Summer Olympics and the demand for the product, they opted to do two Tokyo Dome shows in January. He added that he doesn’t foresee it being a yearly tradition of running back-to-back nights at the Dome.

Realistically though it's because January 4 falls on a Saturday and given how big NJPW is now, they can't fit every title match and big matches like Liger's retirement matches and Jericho-Tanahashi on one card so they're spreading it out over two day, which would make the event more profitable given they're selling more tickets and merch.

People have said it before, but Yoshino in all honesty never should've come back from his initial neck injury in 2017, given the severity of it. But he did & he became a critical piece of Dragon Gate recovering from the loss of CIMA & the other #STRONGHEARTS guys, especially with how heavy he put over PAC in his last Dream Gate match.

Without Yoshino DG would be a much different place & as sad as it'll be to see him retire from the ring, he'll keep helping the company grow behind the scenes.

The company was practically split into two camps of "Team Yoshino" & "Team CIMA" by the time time he left, but he was still the biggest star in Dragon Gate & top draw.

Yoshino was right behind him, but now that he's retiring, DG is gonna be losing their 2 biggest draws in the span of 2 years.

Given his position as vice president & how much work Yoshino put into building new stars during the last few years, he is probably the most selfless guy in wrestling rn.

Also, a translation of his announcement:

>“In 2020, I will retire as an active wrestler. You may have noticed in tonight’s match you can see that my neck has reached its limits. Even now I have numbness in my arm and can’t put any strength into it. This is not a sudden decision. It’s something I accepted several years ago. The doctors told me that if I reduce my schedule and change my style I would be able to go for a few more years. But my nickname is Speed Star. A Speed Star that can’t move is not a Speed Star at all. I’ve known that since I chose to wrestle this style.
We haven’t decided exactly when in 2020 to retire. It may be spring, or summer, or autumn. Maybe I will wrestle the entire year. I just know I still want to wrestle in front of you fans for a little while longer.
Ultimo Dragon returned to Dragon Gate this year and by coincidence the Toryumon generation that I have been fighting with and teaming with for 20 years has united together. I will fight the Dragon Gate generation and R・E・D as I always have. As Masato Yoshino. I know they are in the locker room listening to this. I am planning on wrestling starting from the series opener. There’s no need to hold back. You are more than welcome to come and try and retire me early. I won’t let you do it. As a member of the Toryumon generation I will still be standing when this war ends.
I want to spend the rest of my time as a pro wrestler to give back to the fans by performing as only Masato Yoshino can. I hope you cheer for me until the very end. “

Arguably? They're totally different peaks though. The sellouts All Japan was getting for years straight after Misawa/Tsuruta in '91 and the mainstream popularity in Japan at the time completely outclasses modern NJPW.

That said, the quality of the top matches from both peaks are definitely comparable and might be a more interesting conversation.
