Was it the booking or was it John Morrison?

WWE offered him a 5 year extension in 2011 and John just said he was pretty burnt out on WWE and wanted to tip his toe in acting, something he wasn't going to really able to do while in WWE unless he wanted to do a terrible WWE film.

WWE didn't do anything wrong in letting a burnt-out guy walk and John in time showed he could be a decent star while in LU and Impact.

Guess they aren't banned.

To answer Kontenks' question, the booking, especially Coleman Francis.

Yeah I mean I liked him in ECW as a singles heel (until he got suspended and had to drop the title to Punk) and his tag team with The Miz was fun. But man he's just a really bad babyface and has always been way better as a heel. Certainly his runs in LU and Impact have been much better than his WWE run ever was.

Not really banned per say but low quality ones with nothing to contribute to the conversation are getting locked real quick.

He was a fine babyface on Smackdown '09 ('memba 2009 Smackdown?) and in the bookend seasons of LU

Dude failed a drug test. He knew he wasn't going to get the Randy Orton treatment around drug testing, and since his gimmick was his abs, he saw the writing on the wall and got out before being suspended again.

I've never seen the appeal of this guy.

But outside of those and even in Impact it wasn't that bad, he's been booked poorly as a face for the most part.

wot? The Signature Pharmacy deal was in 2007 and he left at the end of 2011

He's a very solid B.
I wouldn't build my company around him but he's a very useful utility player.

Did they ever plan on giving him an ECW World Championship reign if Benoit hadn't killed himself?

OP, I don't know what he was like in the 'e, as I wasn't watching any wrestling at that time. I thought he was okay in LU, but didn't get why he was so over.
When he came to Impact, I just didn't like him at all. I thought his promos were crap, and his move set makes him look like the softest striker in the business. Getting hit by that "Starship Pain" looks about as painful as getting nudged by a moth.
Seeing him get "lawn darted" by Kongo Kong was pretty heat though.

I won't miss him, but his ignorant douchey Hollywood himbo character he was running with when he left wasn't too bad.

WWE deals typically go for 3 years, so they renewed it at least once between then AND he won a bunch of titles in the interim.

I'm watching some Smackdown 2009 eps now which gave me the idea for the thread. He's a decent ish babyface, rough on the mike. He comes off as having potential.

i think he did a-ok job as a babyface in LU and Impact

I'd argue that he was a terrible WWE babyface... but WWE makes terrible babyfaces in general

this but unironically

but also: dude isn't the best promo and that's ok, but by the end of his wwe run he was just "he's got abs and does parkour". you can mostly blame booking for that but he didn't (and still hasn't) revamped much of his character.

he really would have benefited from some pre-filmed vignettes like Janela does now, both to get a character over and to hide the fact that he kinda sucks around a live mic. i still like him and he's probably still one of the better guys to come out of tough enough, but he's peaked

His gimmick was that he was the coolest guy in the company who had women fainting over him and radiates so much coolness that everyone else was jealous. He was a winner and everyone else were losers.

Then they had him lose a lot, had him cut generic WWE babyface promos that everyone else was cutting, and had him say shit like "Mr. Ziggles" and dress up as Braveheart and WWE tier humor.
Hieracon - Wed, 14 Aug 2019 00:03:14 EST dYhrmb6W No.6283771 Reply
Combination of the two. His gimmick was how he was this super cool, Jim Morrison-type guy, but he actually wasn't THAT charismatic (and was often overshined by The Miz on the mic when they were tag teaming).

Plus it's hard to do the super cool guy gimmick (which is essentially a heel gimmick) after they turn you face. Once he was a face, he got really stale really quick. Plus he never learned to hit the Starship Pain consistently.

I doubt Morrison was ever going to be a main event star in WWE though. He's better off being a big fish in a small pond, like in LU or Impact.

If Morrison was around now he'd be in Rollins' spot possibly.

He was pretty garbage on the mic, it's why they pushed Miz instead of him...because they still valued mic skills over ring skills then.
That ain't the case today though.

His early story arc in Lucha Underground where Del Rio/El Patron used their WWE hierarchies and the hispanic audience's local hero-esque love for him to turn the fans against Morrison/Mundo and corrupt him into a sociopath was fantastic.

>Mundo is an upper midcard face on the decline
>El Patron shows up as the conquering hero who spat in WWE's face and returned home to Mexico, immediately becoming a huge star eclipsing Mundo
>Begin having backstage segments together where Patron belittles Mundo for only ever amounting to a midcarder in WWE, suggesting that's where he belongs
>The berating effects Mundo's confidence, causing multiple losses to Patron in big matches
>All the while the live audience is completely oblivious to Patron's backstage scheming, as the pre-recorded nature only allows them to see him as the genuine conquering hero
>Mundo eventually becomes so desperate that he becomes the sociopath heel willing to do anything to defeat Patron and prove that he's the "face of Lucha Underground", in doing so making the fans revile him beyond repair

An actual masterpiece of a story that could only be done in a pre-recorded professional wrestling show.

my one wish with this feud was the blowoff at Ultima Lucha.

It ended with Melina coming back and Patron throwing Mundo threw Dario's office window. They wouldn't show what happened to his face, but Melina was shrieking... I thought they were going to set up Mundo to be some kind of scarred, Phantom of the Opera masked rudo character for Season 2.

But I wonder if those plans got scrapped when Melina got dropped

It still works even with the full context, as Patron was being a dick but Johnny went too far because he defenestrated him after losing fair & square.

Then he spent the better part of 3 seasons being an utter piece of shit and I loved it.

shut the FUCK up Merkin

The Dirt Sheet was ridiculous-- both of them had ridiculous chemistry with the other and John Morrison just said fucking weird ass shit about the Palace of Wisdom or whatever the fuck every intro

an amazing character that never translated to actual television
aside for the whole show just crashing and burning, fuck, they used Mundo so fucking well in LU, the perfect match

I wish Worldwide Underground was a stable still

It was never gonna work, having a dude come out in flashy gear, glasses and call himself the "shaman of sexy" but once he opens his mouth he sounds like a 14 year old cutting a promo to his camcorder wasn't going to last long.
He lacked charisma and intensity and despite going on to some success he never proved he had either to this day...

The booking
WWE could have forced him down everyone's throats if they wanted to.
Politics fucked him over and so, he spent his last year in the company being jobbed the fuck out, and buried like a geek against The Miz on his final night.

I really don't like the way they wrote him out. No one bought The Miz as a badass heel, but WWE went for it. Shit was lame.

IN 2009, he was clearly being groomed as Punk's next big feud. He was all over TV and they put him next to Hardy (Top face) at the time. I don't know what happened but by 2011, he was burnt out and just wanted to act and do his own thing. He knew WWE wasn't going to let him do that, so they separated on their own terms.

As for him, his only real problem are his mic skills and shitty finish. He's gotten a whole lot better since he's left WWE, and WWE is pushing someone like Seth who is similarly terrible on the mic. (Seth's voice is nasally, while Morrison was marble-mouthed and too deep)

His line delivery is very bad. I liked Morrison the wrestler but when he talked I was instantly turned off.
