We were talking in the AEW thread a bit about theme songs and how they have fallen off. WWEs entire womans division has generic EDM and the entire mens division has drop D buttchug Roman Reigns style music.

AEWs are almost all terrible. Jake The Snakes doesn't fit his character at all. MJFs is alright but the "Im better than you and you know it" at the start feels really forced. Kenny Omegas sounds like something a Twitch Streamer would use for a youtube intro on some edit they did. Impacts are almost all terrible too.

You can blame 90% of this on Royalty Free music but I think what's shocking is that WWE actually hires people to make their themes and they still sound like royalty free music. They need to hire a multi instrumentalist who understands the characters that he is writing for.

Jake The Snake sounds with MIDI drums and what sounds like a Casio keyboards preset synth sounds? He should have some nasty blues rock and roll saloon cigar chompin song.

Jim Johnson was great but it's not like he is the only person on earth who can write a good song. A great theme song can really MAKE a star though. I like Hangman Pages theme and few others for sure. But it's way less common to get a good intro theme nowadays.

Yeah but how many of them want to work in wrestling? Especially when composing theme songs means the company will own it and not the song writer?

Who on the scene currently has a good theme song? And why is it MOOSE:

Most US wrestling themes have fallen off hard over the last 10 years, but it's not all bad.
NJPW has great themes & Dragon Gate's entrance music is legit god-tier

True. I forgot to mention that NJPW has some great themes and DragonGate has some decent ones.

AEW's composer is a guy by the name of Mikey Rukus. However, some themes, such as MJF's, are holdovers from previous feds.

I think he's very good at what does. Certainly no Jim Johnston, but better than most who have come along in a long time.

Perhaps to his detriment, however, he feels that when he has to compose a theme for a legend, he has to "pay homage" to that legend's well known WWE or WCW or Japan theme. He's stated this previously on his Twitter account.

I happen to think Jake The Snake's AEW theme is actually really good...if he were a face. Now that he's firmly established as a heel, Mikey Rukus needs to pay homage to Jake's heel WWE theme.

See that original theme is just ten times more slimey and snakey then what he used.

honestly at this point I want to go back to the days of incensing third party songs. At least it'll be better than 10 second CFO$ loops.

Yeah so many themes are too generic and/or don't match the character.

Whoever did Johnny Swinger's Impact theme fucking nailed it, though.

I imagine that it's still Dale Oliver composing themes for Impact. Imo, I noticed he really started to improve around the time Hogan and Bischoff came in (although I think the timing is more of a coincidence).

As a guitar nerd, I'll have you know that Roman Reigns's theme is in drop C#, not drop D. Most of the CFO$ era rock songs are in drop C (Seth, Paige, etc.) or lower, except for a few outliers like Ambrose's and The Ascension's, both of which are coincidentally in drop D.

I don't watch Impact but it seems like these past couple of years they've relied on production library music. And that's not a bad thing, I remember Pentagon's being kickass.

I think a lot of it has to do with the mix as well. Some of the melodies are fine, passable or even good but using literal preset basic freeware tones on drums and synths and the obvious DI guitar with no effort to make it sound big.

Jake the Snake should have https://youtu.be/Io3af9r0dj4 with a hiss instead of the laughing. Change the lyrics to be a bit more 'the herald of the murderhawk ' and we're getting somewhere.

OP doesnt slander Jim. He is saying their are more Jims out there.

I also wonder who does the hiring because a lot of people in the wrestling world have bad taste. Imagine Cody picking the guy to make entrance music for people. Neck tattoo vibes.

Are there any truly bad themes in wrestling right now? Like, REALLY bad?

Most themes are just mediocre and generic. Is there anything just plain bad?

the weeks of being mocked for hyping the return of Johnny Swinger, followed by what we actually got, is what gave me general confidence in basically anything impact tries now. They/he nailed it with every aspect of that character.

I dunno, that theme definitely isn't protovision, I wouldn't even call it a ripoff of it, but I like it enough. I think it works.

Now if you mean his previous AEW theme... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=783qpbZcpBo

Yeah. Not good. I think this one came after he used the straight up the same song ripoff of Protovision from All In, I'm guessing they realized they'd still need to license the real song to use that. But it looks like one of the ways they're gonna follow WWE's lead is in not paying to license music for themes, so the current one is good enough I guess.

Maybe it's just from hearing them so much but I like a lot of TJPW's themes. Miyu and Yuka both have great ones. Shoko's Kirby theme might be kind of weird but it works with her entrance and I can't imagine her with anything else at this point. Yuki Aino's Slayers ripoff is probably one of my favorite entrance themes right now too.

Also the few times they use licensed music is pretty good i.e. Sakisama's Rose of Versailles theme and Hyper Misao's Kai Band theme.

nowhere near as bad as the one he had before. almost makes this one seem good. I like the drumming.
