if he would've never wrestled again after 2001 people would look back at it fondly

Saturn was a guy who everyone loved in the 90s but the vast majority of his work doesn't hold up.

That first year in WCW from his debut to the match with Raven at Fall Brawl 98 to free the Flock is based as hell.
Good shit with Booker T, Goldberg, Chris Benoit, even Rick Martel

Listen I'm not a big fan of HHH overall but his 2000-2001 run is undeniable.

2000 Tripper was incredibly good. He had some great opponents too, but his only stinker was Mania, and that wasn't his fault.

This match is only notable because the crowd fucking insanely hot for the whole match and Kane's best return. The match itself wasn't anything special.

Booker T held his own against Benoit, Finlay and Martel in 98 whereas Haitch really felt like the clear "worst" of the bunch working opposite Foley and The Rock.

pure meltzerism. the match was special BECAUSE the crowd were hot. The fact that people still remember it twenty years later is testament to that.

[Sting - I Agree.jpg]

If you watch the match without crowd noise or judge it strictly on the merits of the in-ring action, it was mediocre at best. But the hot-as-fuck crowd enhanced the match—they made it feel like a massive spectacle. It's a lot like the classic Do Fixer vs Blood Generation match in ROH: The end rush is a bunch of disjointed flippy shit with little-to-no psychology, but god-fuckin'-damn if that crowd doesn't make it all feel hype as fuck.

99-00 HHH was clearly the worst of the top guys at the time but had some all-timers against Rock and Cactus. He got significantly worse after WCW folded and he came back as a babyface for that godawful run. All hope was lost when Shawn came back and HHH tried to employ the same melodramatic bullshit in his matches. Post-2002 Shawn and Hunter are genuinely two of the worst who have ever done it.

Match with ‘Taker at X7 fucking sucked btw.

All of his peers in the main event scene for starters. No fucking way even 2000 Haitch was better than Rock, Foley, Angle, Kane or Benoit. Maybe you could make an argument that he was better than ‘Taker and Jericho but I’d still probably disagree.

Anyone not drowning in WWE kool-aid wouldn’t even recognize that as a hot take. Shawn’s booboo ouchy-face melodramatic bullshit and WWE’s insistence that it's some of the best work ever actually ruined an entire generation of wrestlers. Look at Dusty’s NXT vs current NXT if you actually want a tangible, current example of this.

Shawn was better when he was coked up and God hadn’t told him that dramatically grimacing into the camera after another kickout was actually the way to work, bruther.

no he fucking wasnt lmfao
HBK in 1996-1998 legit sucks outside of like 5 matches. He was a terrible terrible top face and as the top heel he was drugged out of his mind every week. Non stop disappointments from him match wise. HBK pre-1995 and post-2002 are better than his physical prime years as a top guy. That '02 and on run cemented him as one of the WWE goats.

I completely agree. I think Shawn's a little overrated, but postcomeback the only really bad match I can think of (outside of the forced epic shit with Haitch) was his work with JBL where he was suddenly poor. And JBL fucking sucked against everyone who wasn't Eddie or Cena that one fucking time, so that's hardly Shawn's fault.

‘02 and on is when he started having really shitty matches, where everything has to be masturbatory and overwrought with ‘emotion’ because wrestling is a booboo face kick out spectacle. HBK sucks and just didn’t understand pro wrestling as fundamentally as the WWE would like you to believe. If you like bad wrestling that’s fine, I love SHLAK, but don’t pretend ‘02 and on Shawn is better than pre-injury Shawn. And it’s not like I’m overly fond of that HBK either.
